LITHIUM ION BATTERIES

When searching for solar batteries, it’s important to decide which type of battery will suit your home’s needs. There are a few different options when it comes to solar batteries. Lithium Ion batteries are one of the options for a solar battery. So, which of the most popular solar batteries are run by Lithium Ion?

  • LG Chem

  • Mercedes-Benz Energy Storage

  • Tesla Powerwall

HOW ARE LITHIUM ION BATTERIES DIFFERENT?

These types of batteries are made from lithium and carbon. These two elements make this solar battery lighter than most. With lighter battery power, this makes the solar battery weigh less overall. Lithium Ion batteries can be hung on the wall as opposed to the floor, which gives the homeowner more space. As far as price, Lithium Ion solar batteries range anywhere from $5,000 – $13,000. This is roughly the middle ground for solar batter pricing. So, they aren’t extremely affordable, but also are not extremely expensive. With a higher price tag, higher storage capacity usually follows.

HOW MUCH ENERGY CAN IT STORE?

Since lithium is a reactive element, its atomic bonds can store more energy than other kinds of batteries. The storage capacity varies from different types of batteries. Lithium Ion batteries can store anywhere from 2 Kw h – 20 Kw h. This changes from battery to battery, and depends on how many batteries are combined as well. As far as energy storage goes, Lithium Ion batteries fall in the higher range of storage capacity.

WHAT ABOUT THE MEMORY?

Lithium Ion batteries are unique. These batteries are not prone to memory effect. This means that the battery will retain energy efficiency without needing to be drained completely before recharging. Other types of batteries only keep optimal storage when they are used up entirely, and then recharged. Luckily, that is not the case for Lithium Ion, and these batteries retain their optimal storage longer.
